Gaggle of Geeks 2005
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Overview
^^^^^^^^
The first annual Gaggle of Geeks picnic is being held this Saturday,
August 20th, at Bethpage State Park from 12-5pm. [1][2] You're invited
to come down and enjoy the sun, some burgers, and some friendly outdoor
games with your fellow long island geeks. This is a great excuse to get
out from in front of your computer and see the sun. Don't be scared,
we're going to do it together. We'd love to see a lot of people come
out for this picnic, so bring all of your friends. I mean it, invite
your friends and bring them along - it's going to be a blast.
The Park
^^^^^^^^
Finding the park is very easy. [3][4] The entrance to the park is right
off of the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway. Take the Seaford-Oyster Bay
Expressway (Route 135) to exit 8. (If you're coming from the north, be
cautioned that the exit sign is slightly blocked [5]) Once you get to
the end of the exit ramp, make a left turn and then turn at the sign
that reads "Bethpage State Park - Picnic Area" [6]. It is right after
the exit, so if you drive for more than 30 seconds you've probably gone
too far or in the wrong direction. :o) Just follow that road until you
get to a toll booth (it'll be a little bit, maybe a mile). Look out for
bikers as there are a few bike trails that cross this road. It is very
likely that the $6 parking fee is waived since we have a permit. (I'm
going to call the park to find out about this.) Then just park and walk
towards the crowd of geeks. [7]
What to Bring
^^^^^^^^^^^^^
LILUG is springing for burgers, buns, and cheese. We're going to make
sure that we have all of the essentials (plates, napkins, some drinks,
etc.) Having said that, the more stuff that we have, the more fun the
picnic will be. So, it would be awesome if you brought something to
share. Bring a bag of chips, a 2-liter of that weird soda that you
like, some Entenmann's thing, a football and a frisbee, you get the
idea. This is the way we do picnic's in the open source world - scratch
your own itch, share and share-alike, etc.
